Have extra milk that you aren’t sure what to do with?  Donated milk is an awesome way to share excess milk and help an infant in need.  Donor Milk is often used as a bridge to help nourish premature babies until a birth mother’s milk comes in.  Milk Market is now accepting donations of extra human milk from approved milk donors through the Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies.  Milk Market will then facilitate getting the milk to the Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies where the milk will be safely screened and pasteurized and returned to babies of need in the surrounding communities.

WHAT IS THE MILK BANK FOR BABIES?

The Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies (MMBB) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and a proud member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). Their mission is to improve infant health outcomes by ensuring that medically vulnerable babies in Minnesota and the Upper Midwest have access to safely pasteurized life-giving donor human milk when mother's own milk is unavailable or in low supply.

Your donation will be temporarily stored in our deep freezer until it’s transported to the Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies. At the processing lab, donations from multiple donors are pooled together, pasteurized, and tested. Pasteurized donor human milk is then dispensed to families throughout the Upper Midwest region, going to premature and sick babies in the hospital first. When surplus donor milk is available, it can be purchased by families in the community to provide a bridge while mother’s milk supply is established or as needed to support their breastfeeding goals.

IS IT SAFE TO USE DONOR MILK?

WHERE DOES MY MILK GO AFTER IT IS DONATED?

When mother’s own milk is not available or in low supply, the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recognizes donor human milk as the best alternative. When considering the use of donor human milk, families should consult with their healthcare provider to discuss the benefits and risks. According to the AAP and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the safest source of donor human milk is from an accredited milk bank. The FDA advises against acquiring milk from family, friends, or individuals through the Internet who have not followed careful donor screening and safe milk handling practices.
